Why Layton Would Want To Avoid An Election

Screen shot of Layton admitting he is ready to prop up Harper’s government shows facial expression that indicate discomfort. But it’s a bitter pill he have to swallow since failing to gain substantial seats for NDP in another election would mean Layton will be under pressure to give up his leadership. There was speculation that outgoing Manitoba’s Premiere Gary Doer would be a good successor to Layton. Harper wasted no time in appointing him as U.S. ambassador right after he announced he was stepping down. But what’s to stop him from running when the time comes.

Avoiding election would be favorable to Harper because it would stop the momentum of Liberal’s wave of campaign style ad. They would also avoid going to election with Flaherty’s recent announcement of bigger than expected deficit still fresh in people’s mind. By delaying the election, the economy might start to recover and Harper can claim his stimulus package is working.  For now, the NDP can claim that the incentive for the unemployed are so huge that they can’t afford to turn it down. But it was pretty obvious that NDP is trying to avoid an election at all cost. But that would just be delaying the inevitable that Layton’s time to depart have come. NDP need a more moderate leader like Gary Doer.

Ignatieff don’t have the same pressure as Layton. It won’t be hard for Liberal to gain seats and with anonymous Liberal insider whispering to the media now muted after Dion’s ousting, Ignatieff would likely get another chance. Provided he does not lose more Liberal seats in the next election.

  1. Sounds about right, except that I’m sure Doer had been offered, and accepted Harper’s appointment before he announced his resignation as premier.

  2. Are you saying Gary Doer may return and run in the next election? Because that would be awesome.

Personally though, I suspect he is getting international experience for a future run.
