Summary of 2009 Israel-Gaza Conflict So Far

Hamas try to provoke Israel to war by discontinuing the ceasefire and firing short range rocket on Israel.

Israel began planning and executing widescale retaliation, this time backed by co-ordinated media campaign, learning from past mistake during the Lebanon Hizbollah summer war. This succeeded in a way as foreign journalist were banned from Gaza preventing them from reporting and showing grizzly videos and pictures of the carnage. The ban stayed in place despite ruling and instruction by the Supreme Court to lift the ban.

As Israel have warned, it became evident that Hamas did acquire advance rocket from Iran. For the first time in Hamas history, they have rockets that could reach further into Israel, putting it within range of Israel’s nuclear reactor where nuclear warheads are believed to be stored.

Several Israeli were hurt and killed by rocket attacks. Meanwhile, hospitals in Gaza are struggling to cope with injured and deaths.

Israel’s foreign ministry met with Egyptian Hosni Mubarak the day before Israel attack began. This is being used by Hezbollah and Hamas as proof that Egypt is colluding with Israel. Hezbollah is calling on Egyptians to rise up. Demonstration were held in Egypt and some protesters were arrested. Palestinian President Abbas is also being accused of working with Israel. Hamas cite Abbas criticism of Hamas and muted criticism of Israel’s action as proof. Palestinian protest against Israel and Abbas, some protesters were arrested. (This seems to be a new tactic by Hezbollah and Hamas, to rally Arabs against their government which has peace treaty and diplomatic relations with U.S. and Israel).

Israel reported to be disrupting Hamas broadcast with messages telling Palestinian that Hamas leaders have abandoned them and is in hiding.

Hamas leader warned Israel that they are prepared and Israel would suffer if they proceeded with their ground invasion.

About 300 tunnels are estimated to exist in Gaza for smuggling weapons and supplies. One news report put the estimated tunnels destroyed by Israel at 1/3 of the original numbers.

Majority of Israeli, sick and tired of the rocket attacks, backed Israel’s action.

Mosque and schools have been attacked by Israel. These are being used by Hamas to store weapons according to Israel. Latest incident involved an attack on a mosque where prayer was in progress. Several news sources mentioned retrieval of  several deaths and injured in the mosque.

Tanks and troops massed in border with Gaza and warship and submarines deployed in Gaza coast. Artillery are now being fired, probably to clear the open space of mines. Airstrikes, which have killed 2 Hamas officials and their families so far, continued.

One estimate put the death toll in Gaza at 440 with 2,280 injured. 4 Israeli have been killed so far from the rocket attacks.

Protesters around the world have been gathering the last few days denouncing what they called collective punishment by Israel. Counter protest were also held defending Israel’s right to exist and defend itself.

/end of summary

I really don’t feel like commenting much on this since two sides are controlled by war hungry, violence incline group. There was a time when peace treaty was within reach, then the Israel’s Prime Minister leading the peace negotiation was assasinated by right wing hawk. Former Palestinian President Arafat was once considered the worse terrorist by U.S. and Israel. With his death, a more militant group Hamas has risen. And while Israel attempt to eradicate Hamas, an even more militant pro Bin Laden group is gaining ground in Gaza. Unless world leaders could reach into their hearts and give an all out effort to solve the humanitarian and political crisis in Palestine, we could expect to see a continued worsening cycle of violence and hopelessness until it infects us all. Those who live by the sword (or guns and rockets) would die by the sword.

I’ll just continue to chronicle or summarize this on going madness. The first casualty of war is truth. So I would take any comment from both sides with a grain of salts.

“A smart person knows to only believe half of what they hear. An intelligent person knows which half to believe.”

  1. Every Muslim in the world would view this incident as something genocidal for Palestinian, they will use every means to show the whole world, that the punitive action of Israel to Gaza is a mass slaughtering of the Palestinian. But wait, which side started it first, Israel is just reacting to what Palestinian long range missile bombing to Israel. If Israel really wants to annihilate every Palestinian in this planet he can easily do so, but he is just surgically picking only the involve one. But like every war that involves powerful armaments you cannot discount that there will be innocent casualties.

I live in a country where there is minority Muslim populace. They (the Muslim) justify the killings and beheadings of their Christian countrymen, while our weak government turned their head on another side, just not to antagonize the Muslim. I envy Israel as a nation because they can stand up against anyone, even at the expense of worldwide condemnation. I envy the people of Israel in spite of their racial religious, and ethnic differences they rise up and defend their nation.

  2. Let us pray for the safety of Palestinian civilians who held hostages by Hamas and the safety of Israeli soldiers. May this campaign end swiftly and may Hamas be annihilated. May moderate Muslims emerge victorious in the struggle for Gaza!
