Flaherty gave $122,430 bidless contract to MacPhie

Toronto Star is reporting today that Flaherty broke rules to hire ex-Harris aide.

flahertys.jpgThe $122,430 contract to Hugh MacPhie, who worked in the former Ontario Conservative premier’s office, violated Treasury Board guidelines requiring multiple bids for contracts over $25,000. …….

“Here’s the finance minister awarding a single-source contract for $122,000 for two months of work to an old Harris spin doctor. This is really an egregious abuse of his position,” NDP critic MP Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay) said yesterday. ….

“What’s going on here? This just looks exactly like what the Conservatives went after (former Liberal prime minister) Paul Martin for (with) all the single-source contracts to Earnscliffe,” Angus said, referring to Earnscliffe Strategy Group, a government relations and strategic communications firm. …..

In fact, the original contract was for $98,580, but MacPhie then billed for another $24,000.

Angus said it is clear that Flaherty is “using taxpayers’ money to help out a lot of Conservative friends and they are basically breaking the rules to do it.”

He said it is particularly galling because the Conservatives ran in the last election on a promise to end the patronage and special deals.

“Now they are giving these untendered contracts to the old Mike Harris gang,” he said.

It would be interesting to see how Harper and his party downplay this or try to shift the blame once again. Maybe they would just refuse to answer the question like they did on several occasions. If the pressure builds, they could always result to spewing out some hatred again to distract from coming under scrutiny.

  1. Just want to add comment to my above post. If there’s any of Dion’s people or other opposition parties reading this, I would like to propose that as part of their next election platform, they should introduce a tougher penalty for government officials that violate this rule. We’ve seen this violation happens in past and present government. And they get away with it without even a slap in the wrist. We also want to avoid what happen in U.S. wherein billions dollar worth of contract was awarded without bidding.

  2. […] in deficit and even try to hide it (this should be made a criminal offense btw). For someone who awarded bidless contract. He should be the last person to criticize Ontario. He wants Ontario to cut business taxes. He […]

  3. Its no wonder the Conservatives are the first to blame Liberals and then turn around and pad their cronie friends with fat bidless contracts.
Flaterty is a corporate criminal and he knows it, the Conservative government do as I say not as I do.
Throw them all out of Parliament – I am sick and tired of the Hapless Harper screwing up Canada….and billions of dollars spent in a country where Our soldiers are dying, and their economy is based on opium sales?
Call an election now…we are sick and tired…and gas prices are through the roof…soon we will all be starving.

  4. […] I hear contractor and Harper / Flaherty,  it reminds me of Haliburton’s bidless contract or Flaherty’s awarding contract without tender.  The taxpayer end up having to pay more. And let’s not forget about the Sponsorship scandal […]
